Problem Definition

To translate Centennial College’s physical student handbook into a digital interactive platform to increase usability, engagement, and efficiency for not only its students, but also the administrative staff who need to update it yearly

Research

Content Audit

A through content audit helped us know what are we working with. This step is crucial as it also helps us to identify the strengths, weaknesses and redundancies between the Handbook and other sources for student information, such as the website or student portals.

Research
  • Many topics were repeated throughout the handbook

  • Several links within the handbook were broken

  • Since the handbook was very text heavy, it had become lengthy

  • Very few call to action/ contact details were included in the handbook

Comparative Analysis

We selected some colleges and universities and refer to their student handbook. While analysing we considered comparative elements like voice, tone, interactive elements, content format, call to actions, platform.

  • Almost all handbooks had internal links

  • Most of them had interactive elements (images, icons)

  • Only a few of them had call to action in their content

  • All these handbooks were not text heavy

Surveys & Interviews

We conducted surveys for students and set up interviews with faculties to understand how do students access information and how do faculties update them. This research method was very helpful to us as it provided first hand information. We conducted 12 in-person interviews and gathered insights from 13 participants through an online survey.

Take Aways

  • Content analysis is very crucial and the very first step to tackle any text heavy platform

  • Inter links can be the best solution for text heavy content as it makes navigation easy

  • Information hierarchy is another segment to understand and prioritize while dealing with a manual type of content
